Conservative peer Lord Robathan asked the government about the slowing of growth of life expectancy.
Health Minister Baroness Chisholm of Owlpen responds saying that the government follows research on this topic "with interest" and that there are a range of factors that contribute to the length of a person's life.
Lord Robathan says that in the US life expectancy is falling and "where America leads we often follow".
He asks the government to redouble efforts to promote healthy eating and lifestyle in schools and the NHS to avoid "innumerable individual tragedies" and the costs on the NHS.
Baroness Chisholm says the government takes obesity "extremely seriously" and has many initiatives going forward including the new soft drinks levy and on "harnessing new technology".
